Music Research - Military Music and Military Museums

Matthew’s current dissertation, “Creating Music for Military Museums,” investigates the work of British military composers and explores how their musical traditions can inform and inspire contemporary soundtrack composition for museum films and exhibitions. His research focuses on how carefully crafted music can enhance storytelling, emotional engagement, and visitor experience within historical and educational settings.

As part of this project, Matthew collaborated with the RAF Museum London to compose an original score for Intercept, a 24-minute 1970s Cold War documentary centred on British fighter jets. The soundtrack draws inspiration from traditional military music and mid-20th-century British film composers such as Malcolm Arnold and William Walton, evoking a distinctly patriotic sound that complements the film’s historical tone.

Matthew’s research has also included interviews and consultations with leading figures in military and wind band composition, including Michael McDermott, military composer and former Director of Music for the Royal Marines Band Service; Dave Gordon-Shute, Director of the Ealing Wind Orchestra; Dr Litha Efthymiou, Lecturer in Composition at LCM; and his brother Callum, a serving British Army musician. These conversations have provided valuable insight into compositional techniques, orchestration, and the enduring legacy of military music in modern contexts.

Music Research - Theme Park Music

Matthew grew up on the Shropshire–Staffordshire border, spending much of his childhood at Alton Towers and Drayton Manor Resorts. These experiences inspired his passion for theme park music — an art form that unites storytelling, atmosphere, and emotion to create immersive worlds that resonate with visitors.

While studying Music Technology, Matthew focused his academic research on this specialist field, exploring how theme park music is composed, who creates it, and the emotional impact it has on audiences. His dissertation, “The Importance of Theme Park Music,” examined the cultural and psychological significance of sound in themed entertainment and was awarded a Distinction. As part of his research, he interviewed Simon Allen, Director of Music and Entertainment at Alton Towers and Merlin Entertainments — a 45-minute discussion now available on YouTube.

Alongside his academic work, Matthew has composed original music for themed attractions, including a commissioned entrance plaza soundtrack for ZooLogical Park in Staffordshire, and has received musical briefs from Alton Towers. He also enjoys re-imagining classic attraction soundtracks, creating new re-scores for well-known rides such as Soarin’ at Disney’s EPCOT, combining his love of composition with a deep appreciation for the craft of themed entertainment.
